The Proximus Home Optimizer for desktop has already been successfully used by Proxmius technicians in the field for a long time and is being extended by an app version for Android. This way, there is an even wider range of mquadr.at self-care solutions at the technicians’ disposal, in order to take care of necessary configurations on site (e.g. Wi-Fi optimization) next to hardware installations (modem etc.).

Based on m2suite mobile, technicians receive a comprehensive app that helps them master the daily challenges with the customers. From diverse Wi-Fi tools like “Measure Wi-Fi signal”, “Wi-Fi analyzer”, “Wi-Fi optimizer”, and “Position Wi-Fi extender” to specific home network tools and the speed test, all necessary tools are offered to provide the customer with the optimal Internet experience.

Surfing with optimal speed

To explain Internet speed to the customer on site is not always easy, the integrated speed test of the Proximus Home Optimizer offers the best support for this situation. Next to the plain numbers (up- and download as well as ping), the most commonly used Internet services are listed along with their quality; this way, the technician can explain to the customer which services (video streaming, online gaming, etc.) are available at the current performance. If this is not enough, the customer can also be advised to upgrade their connection or choose a better rate. Finished tests are saved and are available as tables, which allows for the comparison of different results.

The best tools for the home network

With the “Network scan” function the technician can check which devices are connected to the network. This way, the customers can find out what the situation of their Wi-Fi home network is and whether any devices are potentially causing problems. The Proximus Home Optimizer calculates the optimal Wi-Fi channel for the technician in just a few steps, which is then set automatically on the modem.

Extensive Wi-Fi tools

With the practical “Connect to Wi-Fi” option, the technician can establish a Wi-Fi connection to the customer’s modem directly through the Proximus Home Optimizer without leaving the app. After connecting, the technician can conduct further support and optimization processes.

Via the “Wi-Fi access point list” the technician can list all surrounding Wi-Fis and see their signal strength as well as additional detailed information that is essential for support (e.g. used frequencies, BSSID, etc.). Additional options help to limit the displayed results here as well, so that all important information is immediately visible.

The “Wi-Fi environment” shows all surrounding Wi-Fis as a graphic overview for both 2,4 and 5 GHz. This way, the technician can recognize potential overlaps or interference factors even more easily and help the customer to avoid them.

If the technician wants to determine the signal strength of singular specific Wi-Fis, the tool “Measure Wi-Fi signal” can display the exact strength of available networks. In doing so, it becomes evident immediately whether neighboring modems have any influence, while the tool also helps to determine the best position for the customer’s modem. Once a position has been chosen, the technician can walk through the living area with his smartphone and see potential sources of disturbance, which again can be mitigated by better modem positioning.

With innumerable functions and tools, the Proximus Home Optimizer app supports all technicians in their daily contact with customers and their Internet connections. The app extends the existing desktop solution and offers even more flexibility with specialized Wi-Fi tools, for example, measuring the perfect position for a Wi-Fi extender by walking with smartphone in hand. In addition, the technician is able to optimize the Wi-Fi with just a few taps, measure Internet speed or evaluate the home network. This enables a type of on-site service that not only masters the challenges of the customer, but also comprehensively aids the technician in highly diverse Internet problems.

For a more in-depth analysis, the “Wi-Fi Access Point List” can be started via the Wi-Fi analyzer tile. It displays important information for technicians, for example the BSSID, the used frequencies, the network type or the beacon interval of the surrounding Wi-Fis. Different filters and options to change the sort sequence form an overview that allows for the quick screening of information.

“The Wi-Fi environment” is an additional display of the Wi-Fi situation on site. In differently highlighted trapezoids all neighboring Wi-Fis are shown, which allows the technician to narrow down the factors that could influence the customer’s Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi optimization

If the Wi-Fi actually needs to be improved, this can be accomplished directly through the app: our tried and tested algorithm automatically calculates the optimal Wi-Fi channel and sets it on the modem, which avoids any long-winded configuration process via the modem web interface.

In order to fulfill a technician’s requirements, an extended “Detail view” helps with assessing the quality of single Wi-Fi channels at a glance. Additionally, the Wi-Fi can be measured for several rooms in order to calculate the optimal configuration for the customer’s entire home network.

Extended home network with the “Powerline” desktop

Via the “PLC” (Power Line Communication) desktop, the technician can quickly and easily set up powerline adapters for the customer, add new ones or check the quality of an existing powerline network. Just like with the other desktops, a clean and tidy widget offers fast access to information by listing all active adapters, while a color-coded icon displays the connection quality. Further information (e.g. the firmware version or MAC adress) is displayed when a specific adapter is selected. This includes the options of changing the name, removing an adapter that is no longer required or, if necessary, resetting it.

All important information at a glance - the “Status” desktop

In case more detailed information about the current state of the customer’s network and Internet connection is necessary, the “Status” desktop offers that information in a focused and detailed way that is also relevant to the technician. Here, the processes for acquiring information in the field should be kept short as well. For this reason, the technician will primarily receive the details that are needed most often.

Nowadays, many devices are connected via Wi-Fi at the same time, therefore, keeping an overview is getting difficult for many users. The “Network Scan” feature offers users a practical and clear list of all devices using the same Wi-Fi network. This also includes detailed information about the recognised devices, ranging among others from the IP address to the device name and the MAC address. Additionally, with the “Wi-Fi Access Point” feature, users can discover even more information about the Wi-Fi networks in their surroundings. All available Wi-Fi networks are listed and display valuable information about their current status and signal strength, as well as many more data such as the currently used channel and Wi-Fi frequency. This way, users even have a view into the Wi-Fi networks they are currently not connected to.

Supplying more than 1.9 million Belgian households, these users now have the possibility to use a self-care app for their daily Wi-Fi challenges: From setting up a Wi-Fi connection, optimising Wi-Fi for one or multiple rooms to a speed test – all important home network topics are covered.

The Proximus Home Optimizer is based on the successful m2suite mobile, customised to the wishes and needs of Proximus. The end user receives a fully adapted and branded application that matches the corporate identity and wording of Proximus; this includes a full integration in existing systems. All changes and optimisations made in the app by the user are handled by the servers of Proximus. The authentication of the customers via a login system ensures that all changes are only sent to the correct modem. This guarantees that users only change settings that are relevant for them and their connection and at the same time only modems of Proximus are configured.

Features and functions

Connect to Wi-Fi

A wireless network connection to the Internet is the first choice when it comes to mobile devices. Therefore, it is crucial to help the customers and support them at that very moment: With a clear and well-structured interface it is possible to immediately start the flow for the Wi-Fi connection in the app. All available Wi-Fi connections are shown in a clear list; additional icons help to differentiate between the own Wi-Fi or known Wi-Fi (that the user once connected to) and other Wi-Fi networks in the environment.

Wi-Fi multi-room analysis

In homes it is essential to have a good Wi-Fi connection in different rooms: send documents in the office room, enjoy streaming on the smart TV in the living room while at the same time the tablet in the kids’ room needs to be online. It’s not a problem with the multi-room analysis! The user measures the Wi-Fi reception with the Proximus Home Optimizer in each room and at the end one simple tap is enough to automatically set the optimal Wi-Fi channel for the entire home.

Experts as well as those eager to learn more are also considered: a clear list shows the reception of the measured rooms including additional recommendations and cross-selling for further devices (Wi-Fi Extender) to enhance the reception.

Wi-Fi optimisation

As soon as the user is connected to Wi-Fi, he/she is offered further optimisation options. In the main interface the user can start the analysis with just one tap and check the quality of the Wi-Fi connection. Should an optimisation be necessary, the user just taps on the results to automatically set the optimal Wi-Fi channel.

The Wi-Fi detail view helps the user to see the usage of the available Wi-Fi channels at a glance. Coloured bars display the quality of the respective channel. For a better orientation, the currently connected Wi-Fi is displayed as shorter bars in the diagram.

Wi-Fi environment

The Wi-Fi environment addresses beginners as well as experts. The individual Wi-Fi is marked a different colour and in combination with the display of all Wi-Fi in the environment it allows a better evaluation of the location. This diagram visualises all Wi-Fi’s in the surrounding area and how this influences the reception quality.

Speed test

Once the Internet is set up and the Wi-Fi optimised, sooner or later the question „How fast is my Internet?“ arises for many users. The speed test feature of the Proximus Home Optimizer offers users assistance right away. They not only benefit from common tests of Ping and download / upload speed, but also from additional information that helps the users to put their results into context.

With a clear result screen users receive one of the most important information first: rating of the most common Internet services (such as e-mail, surfing or video streaming) is shown and also offers additional information about these. With a colour coded traffic light system all available services including their quality are immediately visible. The user can, therefore, easily evaluate if it is possible to stream or browse the Internet; additional explanations also help beginners to understand these ratings. Experts on the other hand gain additional insight with the help of an extensive detail view (e.g. max/min measured values, information about the connected network and much more).

All required components (network, VPN, browser, e-mail, security settings, etc.) are configured automatically a single mouse click suffices!

In addition to Belgacom's given time target, a really complex hardware configuration proved to be particularly challenging in this extensive project . The modem supported by Scarlet (Sagem F @ st 3464) is configured fully automatically for Wi-Fi and VoIP.
In the background the software constantly checks each and every configuration step to ensure correct set-up and flawless functionalities (for example, DSL connection test, e-mail pop check etc.).

On request of Belgacom, special attention was directed to negative flows. In order to let the user know exactly what kind of problem occurred and what to do about it, accurate information about potential exit points or reasons for termination of the program are displayed.

In addition to the custom features mentioned above, this special installer is also equipped with our mquadr.at HTML-help to provide users with useful information about every installation (which is also available offline).

In this context, information on the 10 most commonly used firewalls (including screen shots of possible error messages as well as precise explanations) was also integrated. Therefore customers know exactly how to proceed, for example, if the firewall demands to know whether access should be permitted to Scarlet Easy Installer or not. This way the customer's system remains protected throughout the entire installation process.

During the course of the installation the user is asked to enter their user data. The complete system configuration will be carried out automatically by Scarlet Easy Installer to the greatest possible extent. The proper hardware connection is illustrated by means of realistic 1:1 animations. These Flash animations explain step-by-step how to connect cables and all hardware components (that is, modems, phones, splitters and similar) correctly.

The integration of the Belgian national languages Flemish and French, as well as English was another of Belgacom's mandatory requirements.

Besides offering easy set-up of Internet access, of all e-mail accounts and VoIP, Scarlet Easy Installer is also equipped for simply adding another computer. Thus, Scarlet customers may add other PCs to their previously established Scarlet WLAN at any later point in time. The set-up of your home network is done with only a few mouse clicks and without any technical know-how. The initial set-up stored in the config file (including all relevant wireless data) may be easily imported, while everything else will be carried out automatically by the Scarlet Easy Installer.
